What are secondary surface treatments?

These are processes applied to the concrete piece after (or during) curing to improve its appearance: splitting the piece (split), tumbling it in a rotating drum (tumbler), projecting steel balls (shot blasting) or pressurised water (washing). All of them aim for a finish closer to natural stone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Split treatment and what is it for?
It automatically splits the concrete piece in two, giving each face a natural-looking rough finish. It's applied to decorative blocks, kerbs and pavers, with two- or three-sided treatment available on request, and can be combined with Color-mix for a finish even closer to natural stone.
How does the Tumbler treatment achieve an aged finish?
Already-dry concrete pieces are rotated and knocked against each other inside a rotating drum, which breaks the sharp edges and creates an irregular, rustic texture much in demand for decorative pavers and kerbs. It can be combined with Color-mix for a result even closer to natural stone.
What does the Shot blasting treatment involve?
Steel balls are projected onto the already-dry concrete piece, before palletising, removing the fine surface layer and exposing the aggregate for a shot-blasted finish of high aesthetic value, ideal for facade and urban-design elements.
When is the Washed treatment applied during production?
Pressurised water is sprayed onto the piece while it's still wet, before curing, removing the surface laitance and exposing the decorative aggregate. It's a low-investment process compared with other finishing techniques, and the water used is recycled and reused.
